Wind and solar were always ever only part of the solution. A healthy mix of nuclear/geothermal to meet peak demand requirements solves this problem. They’re (basically) infinitely sustainable, and we already have the technology to make it happen, no need to invent and implement new battery tech.

It’s simply better technology than what we rely on now, the free market has already determined that. The only reason it hasn’t taken off is because the fossil fuel lobby has done everything it can to sabotage public sentiment for decades

  9. A lot of people don't know that windmills run on diesel fuel. What little energy it does produce on its own is negligible. So when you see those windmills turning like there's no tomorrow, you're actually watching a diesel engine in operation.
  10. mmQ Lisa Turtle
In general, no. The entire point of a wind turbine is that it generates electricity by capturing some of the energy from the wind, no ‘fuel’ needed.

But perhaps you've heard of more specialized applications, where wind turbines are used in remote locations not on the main grid. In those locations, when the wind's not blowing, the turbines aren't generating electricity. And large scale energy storage still isn't very mature, so they can’t just store excess electricity to use later. So, a lot of remote locations will use wind diesel systems. Set up a few wind turbines to generate the bulk of the electricity, and then turn on the diesel generators when the wind's not blowing.

Previously, a lot of these communities relied solely on diesel generators. The wind turbines help save them a lot on the cost of electricity by greatly reducing the amount of diesel fuel they need to import – more than enough to be worth the cost of installation. And from a tree hugger perspective, it helps reduce carbon emissions.

On larger grids, the shear number of power plants helps make up for the shortfall when the wind's not blowing at any one wind farm. But even then, there are other sources besides wind like hydro, natural gas, and coal that can be ramped up when needed.

Oil is a renewable resource. They don't want you to know that.

Yeah it’ll probably renew in a few tens of millions of years or so. But you probably believe the earth is 6,000 years old and god will just pop down and snap his fingers to give us more when it runs out right
  14. Man has not even scratched the surface of how much oil is in the Earth. Our entire usage for all human history would be a negligible sliver of the total amount, like 0.000000000000000000000000000001%. The real problem arises in the way it's used. It's not a problem with oil, it's a problem with greedy little fools.

This is demonstrably false, first of all the number of zeroes in that figure makes it such an astronomically small number that you can’t even contextualize it in reality. Like if that number was anywhere close to accurate then that would mean the amount of oil left in the earth is at least thousands of times greater than the total mass of earth, which of course makes zero sense. Saying shit like this just further demonstrates how uninformed you are about any of this

Alright, Mr. Smartypants. How much oil is in the Earth?
  17. Originally posted by ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Alright, Mr. Smartypants. How much oil is in the Earth?

Well I don’t know I guess no one knows anything certainly not scientists who have been studying this for decades, so how could I presume to know? According to you we won’t know til we drill every square inch of the earth’s crust right? And we don’t know what temperature the sun is unless we fly over there and stick a thermometer in it. And we don’t know the earth is round because we can’t see it for ourselves.

Retards like you will NEVER agree with the body of scientific data that’s available on this subject so what point would there be in me linking some scientific paper answering your question just so you can shit on it with zero facts and 100% confidence anyway?

I’m not going to convince you with a scientific argument so I was just simply pointing out the undeniable fact that the bullshit number you just threw out there could not possibly be correct just by common sense logic.

You say nobody knows how much oil is in the Earth, but you're positive it's not 100 trillion quintillion barrels.
