Wait what the fuck are black holes?

Like, if a black hole is caused by a gravitational singularity where m=∞... why do they vary in apparent size/mass? The variance in size should preclude the possibility of a point of infinite mass or density, no? It never occurred to me before today, but this is just as retarded as dark matter. Fucking retards talking about "micro black holes" and shit like nigga what do you even mean. "Oh but a supermassive black hole has more infinite mass!"

Astrophysicists: explain this to me. Do not vaguely gesture at set theory and say "some infinities are bigger than others", I want to know what the fuck you think is going on there.

Both of these are huge glaring examples of areas in which our model of reality is completely and utterly FUBAR, yet society collectively acts as though these are real things. "Our observations conflict with our model's predictions but just trust me bro it's there haha trust me bro it's different from religion believe in the Prophet Einstein and his mathematical Revelation."

Like I can understand that the surround material being sucked into a singularity has more mass, I guess. But like... how does that distort spacetime further than infinity is already doing? Is the region from which light cannot escape equal for every black hole?

    je'wish space magic

theoretically I think the size and strength of a black hole's field grows with its mass, so the 'size' of a black hole effectively depends on how much matter is nearby that it can 'suck in' and contribute to its mass/density

Like... the only interaction between photons and black holes should occur as a result of the singularity itself, no? Infinity + 1 gram is nonsensical, and also infinity. Why is the Schwarzchild radius even a thing. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

black holes are what happen when spherical objects prolapse in and onto themselves.

Yeah iirc it becomes larger/stronger the more mass it devours. Its usually measured by radio telescope and the distance from edge to edge or its event horizon. Or something.

Need to rewatch that movie. For sciemce.

Thought experiment: if I had "raw singularity" - a singularity (read: point of infinite mass) in a region of space completely devoid of any matter - and suddenly one gram of lead were to materialize and fall into that singularity's gravity well. What would the mass be afterward? What the fuck is "infinity + a gram" besides infinity? Why would it have a higher mass?

Or I guess another way of thinking about this: why is the total mass that has entered the gravity well of a singularity the only kind of information which escapes black holes? Is gravity caused by Schwarzchild radiation? Just a form of it?

AI throws a hissy fit when I ask it this. I might be retarded, or science is retarded.

    I wish I had meth.

I don't think 'infinite' mass at a point can exist, it's just mass so high that we can't measure it

though as a thought experiment I suppose adding a gram to an infinite mass would cause it to just disappear to an observer, can't imagine it's possible to be able to convert between a rational and irrational number

This is kind what I was getting at initially: infinite mass is a direct prediction of relativity. Relativity supposedly predicts black holes from which photons can't escape, but my understanding is that prediction within relativity requires infinity. If the functional mass of a black hole is not infinite, just unfathomably large, relativity doesn't actually predict the black holes we observe.

I think that relatively requires a constant, not necessarily infinity as a way to anchor predictions - typically the speed of light is used but then it was discovered that high enough density could create a field that interferes with even light so WHAT DO

Nevermind, figured it out. My misunderstanding here is thinking a singularity has infinite mass. I am retarded. They are infinitely dense because they have infinitesimal volume and any mass whatsoever. They're a product of black holes, not the cause. Doh.

Never mind never minding. A singularity can also be described as a point where the curvature of space time become infinitely strong, and if mass is what causes space time curvature..? I'm aware that energy and mass are equivalent in this context, but... that means they're *equivalent*. It doesn't really change the problem I see here. Shit.

Oh cool I stumbled ass backwards into bullshit like quantum gravity. It's all theoretical physics again. I hate science.
