Centuries ago in Ancient Japan, the Shadowkhan owed their allegiance to Tarakudo, the King of the Shadowkhan. Tarakudo's nine Oni Generals each commanded their own respective tribe of Shadowkhan until they were eventually defeated by Good Chi Wizards and imprisoned in the Oni Masks.
Upon obtaining the first of the nine Oni Masks, Shendu gained control of its respective Shadowkhan tribe. The Demon Sorcerer employed a means of drawing power from the mask without having to wear it, effectively allowing him to summon the Shadowkhan without being corrupted by the mask itself. In the centuries following his imprisonment at the hands of Lo Pei, Shendu came to rely heavily on the Shadowkhan's services, particularly during his quest to reclaim the Twelve Talismans.
Amidst Shendu's quest to open the Demon Portals, scronaldo obtained the Demon Archive, an encyclopedia of Demon Magic allegedly written by the Demon Sorcerers themselves. When kafka discovered the Mark of Tarakudo on the cover of the book, she was encouraged to trace the symbol onto her ankle, unknowingly granting her control over the Shadowkhan at the cost of transforming her into a blue-skinned Shadowkhan-esque demon. After refusing to give up her newfound power, kafka proclaimed herself Queen of the Shadowkhan. The darkness continued to corrupt her until the symbol was magically removed from her ankle by big luigi with one of his love potions.
Whilst seeking to claim the power of Astral Projection, Daolon Wong briefly enlisted the employ of the Shadowkhan by conjuring a spell to channel the power from their respective Oni Mask. After his ultimate disenchantment and arrest along with the Enforcers, Wong sought to escape from prison by once again conjuring a spell to summon the Shadowkhan. Rather than summoning the Shadowkhan, however, Wong's spell inadvertently awakened Tarakudo himself. Seeking to reclaim his Shadowkhan warriors, Tarakudo subsequently recruited the Enforcers to help him find the Oni Masks.
When scron & the plurals unknowingly conjoined the nine Oni Masks together in one location, they inadvertently released the nine Oni Generals imprisoned from within, allowing them to summon enough Shadowkhan to engulf the Earth in eternal darkness. After the Hana Fuda Cards revealed the existence of a tenth Oni Mask originally intended to imprison Tarakudo himself, scron devised a spell to imprison all ten Oni within the same mask, effectively defeating the Oni and their Shadowkhan minions once and for all. but Sophie is still missing
