Be honest and don't use a calculator. Set a timer for 10 seconds and solve this math problem before it expires:

    Find 15% of 80

Post your answer, and whether you got it in time.

More importantly, post the mental method that you used to arrive at your answer.

can't do it. I realized 100 isn't evenly divisible by 15 and also I don't care so I stopped trying

Idk figured 10% is 8 and 20% is 16 so.. yeah.

Yeah I split a bill the other day and had to decide a tip and I figured it out relatively slow (~15 seconds) but my friend was dying trying, and pulled out his phone to do it, and I thought it was interesting.

I would figure it out by going

    - 10% of 80 is 8
    - Half of that is 4
    - 4+8=12

I do mental arithmetic instead of pulling out a calculator for almost anything, and if I fucking fail then I enjoy figuring out a better way to do that calculation, so I guess I'm more practiced at it.

Actually, our calculation was not 15% of 80, it was 15% of 70, which was a bit tougher so I cut him some slack. Try this one out yourself, again, but try my above method this time.

    15% of 70

I got it. 12. No time at all.

Here's the method to find 15% of a number:

    1) Find 10% of that number (you better know how to do this).
    2) Take half of that number.
    3) Add it to itself.

    So for 80:
    1) 10% of 80 is 8.
    2) Half of 8 is 4.
    3) 8+4=12.

I'm pretty good with most all math involving 0-100. Your method is nice and mine is nice for me. I'd think half of 7 and 14 and then just think of the number 7 divide it by 2 and add it. It sounds like more steps but it happens relatively the same amount of time. Snap snap bang nawmeeen

common core isn't going to work because if you can't teach people the rote methods you can't teach them the tricks that people who know the rote methods come up with.

common core is going to make things worse, as expected.

Once I learned the trick Falcon and I mentioned, it was pretty eye-opening. Almost also discounts and what have you are in multiples of 5. Once you can do 10%, you can do 5%. Once you can do 5%, you can do any multiple of 5 relatively quicjly by either adding up its parts or by adding up the difference of its parts and subtracting by the original.

Yeah, but some people can't logic and try to solve 15% of 80 by dividing 100 by 15. Just trying to help a nigga out.

I'm not going to open the common core can of worms but the only people who oppose it are regards who practice childsex. All intelligent people who actually understand it, support common core.
