Im not saying there was never violence. we know drugs existed even before I was born but it's weird how much fucked up shit happens

    its very clean and friendly

+ everything I said also. But hey at least it's clean! and just because someone is homeless tripping from drugs running around screaming doesn't mean they aren't friendly.

but when enough of them do it at once it really kinda kills the "friendly" chill vibe that Canada is usually like. Like even in bad neighborhoods "bad" either means you're getting straight up mugged by ethnics, which yeah thats pretty bad but much less common than the "bad" of urban decay which is not unique just to this country and looks very similar to any poverty crime drug areas in any country

although ours are notorious low bottom
damn this was 6 days ago, shout out to the homie gadzooks.

pretty much what my neighborhood is like right now

Nothing has really changed in the 30 or so years of living here in Canada that I can remember. Vancouver especially has always been known for its homelessness, because it's got the optimal combination of high population + high winter temperatures. Unlike the US, we don't have anywhere that's actually safe to overwinter outdoors, but the west coast is generally "milder" than elsewhere so Vancouver has been the final destination for Canadian homeless since time immemorial. Toronto and the surrounding area is the second most popular location for homeless because it at least maintains the high population density (a full third to a half of the population of the entire country lives in southern Ontario) required to bum and busk successfully, even if the winters here are more likely to kill you dead if you've no shelter.

The only thing that's changed is probably the overall population of the country. There are now more people per square kilometer, and that includes homeless people, so their presence feels like a bigger thing.

On an unrelated and contradictory note, I wonder how much of the recent apparent explosion in homelessness is caused by people not having change to give the homeless. Like everyone is using cards, nobody has coins, and so the homeless have a harder time making money begging which could be used to escape homelessness.
