The pope hadn't even acknowledged the sexual abuse of children by clergy was a thing which happens when she did that. As far as the church was concerned, men of god didn't do that - that was their story, and they were sticking to it. Stuck to it for another decade. This permissiveness of nonces among their ranks is not good!
As totse2k1 said upthread, she was ahead of the curve and just protesting something genuinely fucked up. It's evident that she was massively retarded in a lot of ways, but that was probably one of the few things she did that is commendable. It'd be commendable whether it involved immolating her career in the process or not, the fact that it did just makes it that much more respectable. Saying something that needs to be said, calling attention to something that needs the attention, at great personal cost to herself? Yeah that's a rare Sinead O'Connor W right there, bud. -

Priests have ample opportunity with boys and girls. They have positions of trust and authority they can abuse with their most devout parishioners, which does not require altar boys be the only victims. Some priests exclusively target girls - Father Charles Henry Sylvestre raped at least 47 girls over the course of 30 some odd years.
