4.25 minimum wage in the late 80s. I got a union job and it was 9 an hour starting and 11 bucks 2 years later. that was retail-food union. those stores stopped being union and they kept us on for the same pay but people were lucky to get 5-6 an hour which was still over minimum wage.
an apartment back then was at least 550 for a studio and 700 for a 1 bedroom maybe 2 if you were lucky. or 800 2 bedroom if really nice.
but at 5 an hour thats 800 before taxes. You get the idea. it's the same same. you would need a free central heating and sometimes water was included with gas or electric range but you would get yelled at if you left shit running. you had to take short showers and not leave lights on or they would jack your rent up a solid 50 bucks each time you fucked up so you would end up leaving. the rent-caps didn't always work in those days.

and the truth is this. I blew the rest mostly on going out to nightclubs and expensive clothing. i was always broke at the end of the bi-payweek. because I lived my life like a rock star.
should of saved more. but i did when I got married. thats how both of us saved for a home. and our Interest Rates were 12% back then. You young fuckers pay more for real estate but not really based on the value of the dollar and how much you're paid. and you had 2% interest rates with a 2% down while we had to have 20% down
