When I was a teenager some muslims tried to rob me for a pizza once when I was carrying it home. and the neighborhood I grew up in was all crackheads, you couldn't go to the store without someone following you halfway home trying to look inside your bag and talk to you and shit.

In part because it's none of my business and I'm afraid of getting stabbed, but also largely because there's like... a 1% of me doing any good by getting involved. Odds are I'm not successfully deescalating the situation, so it kinda boils down to an entirely different hypothetical:
"The Great Demon Bjarl must hurt people. He must always be hurting someone. You see him hurting a guy in a wheel chair. You can offer yourself to the Great Demon to be beaten in wheelchair guy's stead. Do you nobly sacrifice yourself, and allow the Great Demon to beat you up?"

2023-07-07 at 7:06 PM UTCI struggle enough as it is with being good. I only just barely manage to not actively harm other people most of the time. I'm not so good a person that I'm can commit to being their shield against someone who has chosen to struggle less against their unpleasant nature.
Hell, I'm almost not even good enough to admit to this. The smart response is to always say "of course, I'm a defender of the innocent" - it costs nothing to say this, and situations that'd prove the lie of it rarely come up. You can coast for decades on this claim and never get found out for being the craven piece of shit you are (see: Uvalde). -
