It is "worth stepping outside around midnight local time during the night from Thursday into Friday if you live at northern latitudes and if the sky is clear," Daniel Verscharen, an associate professor of space and climate physics at University College London
I saw one back in 2002 the night we moved into our new home. I think around May or June. I woke up and the sky was red off in the distance. then I could see waves of green coming from north east. it wasn't until the next morning that the tv weather guy spoke of seeing it to the east when coming into work at 4am.
Would be interesting to see it again. Usually California is just too far south of the loop but it usually manages to make it farther south in midwestern US. not sure why that is. a lower latitude like Tennessee but wont even make it to Northern California usually. might have something to do with the ocean water bowing its effect?
