When phones came out, we had what was called party lines, so you had a unique ring when a call came in, with 15 or 20 people using the same line. For example, your calls would come in with one short and two long rings, the guy across the street's calls would come in with one long ring and two short rings, the guy next to you would have his calls come in on three short rings, etc.. Anyone could answer anyone else's calls, or quietly pick up the phone after it stopped ringing to listen in.

You couldn't just make a call direct either. You had to dial the switchboard first, tell the lady the number you wanted to call, then she'd pipe you through (after a bit of friendly chatter). Same with people calling you. They had to go through the operator first.
