Concentration Camps for Gays in Chechenya

   Even if you're not interested in the topic at hand, this is an excellent case study on how the media is able to create and push pure fiction as propaganda.
   
   You may have notice over the last month or so sporadic headlines indicating that Ramzan Khadyrov, the Chechen Prime Minister (and guy with probably the coolest name in the world) is setting up concentration camps for gays, that over 100 have been rounded up and 40 or so 'disappeared'.
   
   Key points from this article:
   
   - All sources trace back to Novaya Gazeta, a Russian-language propaganda outfit in the same vein of Radio Free Europe and co.
   - They completely misconstrue quotes from Russian-language publications knowing that their real target is not Russian speakers who can immediately see through the story to the extent that they're being sued for libel for contorting an FSB official's statement of 'we investigated the allegations and found no evidence' to 'we acknowledge that gays are being abducted'.
   - They make extensive use of photos and quotes in Russian-language media relating to events from 2-3 years prior to the allegations - events that are totally unrelated.
   - News outlets form a 'mesh' of sorts to make their stories more reliable - Novaya prints the original story, Radio Free Liberty posts a variant quoting Novaya as a source, Slate runs a story using RFL as a source, NYT runs a story quoting RFL and Slate as sources etc.

   Maybe stories like this gain traction because while we know deep down they're untrue, we desperately wish they weren't.

   Keep in mind, guys, that this is Chechnya, not just Russia. Chechnya is Russia's autistic Muslim adopted kid who they invade with tanks every once in a while. As long as they taxes and don't do anything the Russians don't like, the Russians don't care what Chechnya does.

    yeah, I try to avoid it for the most part. most of them don't post videos online, but you can find transcripts and sometimes snippets of video from 'conferences' run by the foreign policy 'think-tanks' if you want to know what it feels like to be completely divorced from reality
