Law enforcement agencies from around the globe arrested 288 people suspected of buying or selling drugs on the dark web. In a pair of press releases posted on Tuesday, the US Department of Justice and Europol said the joint effort also resulted in the shutdown of the dark web marketplace, Monopoly Market.
The operation, codenamed SpecTor, was done in collaboration with nine countries, including the US, UK, Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Brazil, and Switzerland. While 155 of the arrests took place in the US, authorities seized $53.4 million in cash and digital currencies, 850kg (or 1,873 lbs) of drugs, and 117 firearms worldwide.
Monopoly Market has been on the dark web since 2019 and has since served as a hub where criminals can buy and sell drugs, according to CyberScoop. German authorities brought down the site’s criminal infrastructure in 2021, Europol notes, which served as the “basis for hundreds of national investigations.” Law enforcement also obtained the buyer lists from the site’s illegal vendors, potentially resulting in “thousands” of more arrests across the world.
This comes just months after international law enforcement raided the homes of individuals with suspected ties to a cybercrime group that stole millions from large companies and hospitals. Last year, Germany shut down the servers for the infamous Russian darknet marketplace Hydra and seized around seizing €23 million worth of Bitcoin. International authorities collaborated to shut down one of the largest dark web marketplaces, DarkMarket, in 2021, which led to the arrest of 150 alleged drug vendors.
“Operation SpecTor was a coordinated international law enforcement effort, spanning three continents, to disrupt drug trafficking on the dark web and represents the most funds seized and the highest number of arrests in any coordinated international action led by the Justice Department against drug traffickers on the dark web,” said US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement. -

I mean, reading the article it looks like feds took over Monopoly and let people keep doing business, collecting their data to make arrests later, like they do with cp sites
with these marketplaces you're supposed to encrypt any sensitive information (specifically delivery addresses, contact information etc) locally before you send to prevent situations exactly like this: if you do it properly the site never actually sees any sensitive data.
a lot of markets have the option to automatically encrypt for you though, which is fucking retarded to use because if you give the site plaintext to encrypt it can store the plaintext. it's happened before with HANSA and other sites I don't remember the names of so there's really no excuse to not be fucking stupid -

they use the same PGP key across sites so unless 20 of your favorite dealers all got new PGP keys I don't see how
i'm still using PGP keys from years ago and they all still work, pretty sure those guys aren't busted -

what use is your crypto key when your dealer has been compromised.
the feds have their hands on his laps as he communicates with you. -
2023-05-04 at 3:15 PM UTCNo I mean the dealers PGP key like for example
GARY THE CLOWN selling CLOWN SUPPLIES like balloons, but oh no CLOWN market gets busted
so you go to NIGGER IBERIAN SLAVE market and see GARY there selling balloons, but how can you be sure it's the real GARY THE CLOWN? who ships out of minnesota and uses bright pink letterstock
oh GARY THE CLOWN has his PGP key so you can verify his account

well each message needs a password to decrypt each message so unless they can brute force his password and do that to every persons PGP chances are it's not compromised
but it has happened, you can also set it so it doesnt need a password each time if you stay logged into a software like for DREAD PIRATE ROBERTS
but if he just used a password for his PGP different than normal he would be much better off.
I've also heard of people sending their details through plaintext and the dealers keeping a log of it all on their computer lol, which at the end of the day any of them could do after unencrypting your message just write your name down in a journal or text file. -
2023-05-04 at 3:18 PM UTClots of email clients have it built right in so you aren't even sending emails you have to verify a email/key first and you are just sending PGP messages back and forth
but all you see is a normal email client essentially it works just like gmail but if anyone else reads it all they see is giant blocks of encrypted stuff
-
2023-05-04 at 3:55 PM UTCi mean if the leo has already got your dealer and is asking him to cooperate in exchange for reduced sentences ....
-
2023-05-04 at 4:20 PM UTCcooperate in helping the police bust his customers?
i think you have it backwards
