There has been a little grumbling about vB5, and I'll admit it has some annoying aspects. With time I think I'll be able to hammer most (although maybe not all) of them out but I just wanted to float the idea of a migration to something else (probably vB3 or 4 but if people feel passionately about something else we could try that too). It doesn't make a huge difference to me, I can hack shit onto the side of whatever we end up on. I haven't looked into what migration looks like yet but there are two main possible outcomes. One is that the DB is non migratable, or a migration is so involved that it's not feasible to do in a reasonable time-frame in which case I would have to dump the db, everyone re-registers, and threads and posts and such are toast. The other is that I can pull a migration script together and things like posts and accounts make the jump.
So I guess I just wanted to get a feel for where people are on it. I'm personally leaning towards not doing anything (partly because I'm a lazy cunt, but also because who really gives a shit about the software, we're not here for forum software), but if people have strong feeling on the matter I'll consider it. So I guess ITT, post if you think a change would be worth it in the dump-everything case and in the stuff-makes-it-over case and reasons or whatever.

Should switch to version 4, even if it means re-registering accounts and starting over, as for threads and posts.

It's fine like it is IMO, but if you got to do a switch make sure you can migrate the DB so we don't lose our accounts and posts.

Thanks, Who's Online with usernames listed, option to automatically subscribe to threads you post in and a user CP where threads with new posts show up in. That's all I want, pretty much a replication of the core features of previous/other totse/Zoklet refugee websites. If it requires starting over, that's fine, the forum is very young and nothing of value would really be lost.

I doubt anyone cares but I've been doing a little work on the code (none of this plugin nonesense, editing the files directly, I want the full spaghetti code experience in a few months) and whatever functional issues vB5 might have the code actually isn't too bad. It's kinda ponderous, partly because the code style and part because there's no separation between validation and intended action (like new thread validation is largely done in the function that makes new threads) which is kinda surprising considering the amount of infrastructure there is in this codebase (custom XML parser, they even have their own string class lol, it's like all the fun of C++ with none of the performance or gnarly language features). But in spite of that they've done a pretty good job of keeping the code path clear, not doing anything too tricky, passing data rather than behaviour. Honestly it's better than vB4 is in that respect.
