just picked up an old laptop today running Linux mint 17. I've been looking at trying Linux for ages now so this has given me the perfect opportunity. anything I need to know that differs from windows? I'm total noob with this. although I've given it a quick look and it has a very similar feel to xp.

using linux is retarded. unless you're managing something like a server for a building network or doing work on embedded automation controllers or something. it's not a personal computer operating system. that's what windows, chrome OS and mac OS is for.
yeah well I wanna use Linux ok? so fuck you

I use Linux as my personal OS and I like it better than Windows. I develope though. It's more customizable and requires less clicking around(more typing).
The first thing to remember is that it's completely different than Windows. It seems like a pain at first.

I use it as a media center for KODI and some steam games works good.

I like it. xp is no longer supported and I don't want a database of every vid I jerk off to, so windows 7+ is out. its kinda basic but I'm not one for flashly and thrilly anyway. it seems pretty fucking quick too.

Mint is pretty much just Debian, so pretty much any questions you have about it will be the same, and they have a huge amount of documentation
I've used mint a few times, from the command line (I've only run it on servers) it,'s not noticeably different at all. I use Bunsen labs, another Debian derivative as a desktop

I just transferred all my music this afternoon. I love the bit where it plays the track when you scroll over it. also handy to be able to rename a file while its open too.

I personally like Ubuntu. I see no need to switch to another distro but I still look.
BunsenLabs seems nice. aldra, what would you say the advantages/disadvantages are when comparing to Ubuntu?

Mint is like Ubuntu's retarded little brother. They kind of fucked their security model a while ago, i'd just use Ubuntu instead.

I'm not that bothered. I'm finding it a nice easy intro to Linux atm.
