There are four relevant variables that folks need to be concerned with while sunbathing...

Folks, air temperature, angle of incidence, cloud cover and wind velocity. Folks, if these variables are not recognized and respected ...there could very well be an atrocity.

Also make sure your lotion is actual sunblock and not just tanning lotion.

I made this mistake a few years ago and suffered agonizing pain for a week.

God damn you are absolutely correct and I stand corrected. I thought about it for a fairly long time as well, Vincent. God damn you're good.

Unwisely, i don't use any sunblock... ever. Doesn't take much of a slip up to suffer severe damage at your latitude. Details?

Let me please note... all other things being equal...ambient air temperature really only affects your comfort level... not so much the amount of insolation you receive. Technically warmer air has more kinetic energy...is moving around faster ...and therefore scatters or reflects more sunlight... but those differences, I believe, are negligible. Wind velocity is the other variable that really only affects Comfort level... not amount of insolation received. Melanin density, angle of incidence and cloud cover affect comfort and insolation received.

It was exwife #2 fault...we went to Galveston beach and she brought this tanning lotion with her and was giving it to me to slop on my WHITE body (she was already tanned because she lived on the tanning bed). After 4hrs or so my skin was staring to tingle and go red...I looked at the bottle and it said tanning lotion for tanning bed, no SPF...or words to that effect.

As is the case with sunburn it only kicks in later...ABSOLUTE agony for at least 5 days...to the point the movement of my pants when walking or just shifting caused great pain to my burned legs.

    The dumb bitch.

My dear old dad, your genetics are adapted to a latitude of approximately 50° (N obviously) . Kicking it in Galveston about midday is about 20-22° too far south. You are extremely fortunate you did not manifest melanoma just from that occurrence. I'm sorry you had to go through all that.

Have you pretty much avoided hitting the beach and the ocean, permanently, because of that occurrence? I love to hear stories... and ...yours, especially.

I was never one to sit on the beach anyway, I only do it when I'm with someone who likes to do that kind of thing. So I don't see many beach trips in my future as I'm retired from all that shit now.

You aren't going to recreate when you are retired? If not the beach, golfing, fishing, etc.? That's an admirable and desirable personality trait that you're willing to compromise and participate in activities with your significant other that she liked but you didn't necessarily care for.

    Compromise is often the key.
