There's this dang ol' international conflict happenin' between Russia and these Russian-backed rebels against Ukraine. It all started back in February 2014, after Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, when Russia went and took Crimea from Ukraine and supported these pro-Russian rebels who were fightin' the Ukrainian military in the Donbas war. And it ain't just been fightin' on the ground, there's been naval incidents, cyberwarfare, and a whole lotta political tensions too.
Then, in February 2022, Russia straight up invaded Ukraine with a full-scale attack. But it ain't like this was all outta nowhere - since 2021, Russia had been buildin' up its military near the Ukrainian border, and its leaders had been talkin' all kinds of smack about how Ukraine shouldn't be allowed to join NATO and how it don't even have a right to exist. Putin even recognized the separatist Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics as independent states before invadin'.
A buncha countries weren't too happy 'bout Russia's invasion and put sanctions on 'em. But even though Ukraine's been fightin' back and takin' back some territories, the war's still goin' on and a lotta people have lost their homes or their lives.
