Pilots of Royal Australian Air Force are being offered psychological assistance after aerial encounters with Chinese warplanes over the South China Sea, RAAF Air Commander, Air Vice Marshal Darren Goldie has said.

“The mental health of our aviators and people… coming in contact with things like intercepts or challenges on the radio… it's important that when we bring them back, we talk to them about the experience,” Goldie told ABC on Sunday.

The RAAF keeps pilots informed about “what services are available, should they be troubled by the experiences they saw,” he added.

Special attention is being given to the wellbeing of aviators who aren’t in the pilot’s seat, as they have less control in tense encounters, the air vice marshal said.

Seems sensible. I don't understand why anyone would be opposed to this.

imagine the counseling needed if they were to fly over active air defenses.

Lots of deys. When was the last time China actually fought in a war? Maybe in Korea, using the famous commie tactic of human waves until the other side runs out of ammo.

as opposed to the US, who bombed the countryside with ticks infected with scarlet fever to cover their escape

The US doesn't try to win to hard, certain people like wars to drag on. Can't sell bombs and fancy gear if you finish to soon. American grunts won every major battle in Vietnam so maybe the problem lays elsewhere you think.

    as opposed to what ?

the US that goes to "battle" every weekend since '45 and never really won a single one of them ?

is that a better indicator of war-winning potential ?

cant even successfully invade your next door neighbor cuba.

they literally bombed Korea until there was nothing left to bomb; there are famous radio intercepts of bomber crews complaining there was nothing left standing for them to hit - the US only wages war against countries that aren't able to mount a credible defence, and when someone else joins the party (in Korea, China moving in with larger numbers and more durable supply lines or in Vietnam, the PANV getting the latest soviet AA tech) they 'declare victory and leave'. and again, in the case of Korea, used the tricks they learned from absorbing Unit 731 to infect the civilian population out of spite.

Modern wars are fought for business not land these days. See General Smedley Butler for more information. Do you seriously think a country like the US or Russia would lose to some shithole if they went total war.

that depends entirely on your definition of winning the said war.

    whats the stated objective.

like for example, in the current russian SMO in ukraine, the stated objective was demilitarization amd denazification of ukraine.

what was US objective in afghan and iraq and syria ?

and on smedley butler, he was just an old man who wrote on his experience retrospectively, ie, not someone wise enough to foresee the future and future consequences of his actions, but rather the sad and sombre observer and a recorder of his sad, woeful mistakes.

I'm repeating myself here. I'm sure Putin has some tear jerking stories for the Russian public, he doesn't give a fuck about some saps in Ukraine. Always follow the money, if Russia, US or any country bombing your ass you have something they want or need to use up old equipment. Also a hidden benefit the generals get to try out their new toys.
