What the shit even is post-modernism

I've legit been reading about it for the past 2 months and I can't find like an actual "what is". It's just a bunch of disjointed retardation.

I'm trying to create some sort of a basic "thesis statement" of postmodernism, and the best I can come up with is basically that "everything is more complicated than that", "that" being any sort of overarching scheme to describe anything.

That's your problem, like existentialism there is no "thesis statement". Stick to the etymological meaning of the term: postmodernism is simply anything which qualifies as a reaction to modernism, whatever that reaction might be. This is why philosophers as diverse as Quine and Derrida can (although there is of course controversy) be called postmodernists. If you need a central thesis for postmodernism it's simply "modernism is wrong on one or more counts", although that's a bit confusing because like modernists, most postmodernists delight in shitting on futurists or realists or anything stemming from enlightenment sentiment. To many people these are the defining qualities of both streams.

But like if I was trying to explain it to someone with absolutely no knowledge of modernism, philosophy, ideology etc, how would I explain it in a nutshell? Although I suppose you are right, a thesis statement would atherosclerosis defeat the point from what I understand so far. I keep seeing the term "postmodernism" in so many philosophy texts I read, I really wanted to just pin the term down.

I don't know man, it seems really hard to do without refrence to other thought. I guess you could say postmodernists are opponents of system building philosophies, but that threatens to confuse them with analytic philosophy which would be a mistake. There are a handful of positive ideas that have come out of postmodernism but the only thread of similarity between the lot I can think of is that they all are presented as a refutation of foundational ideas in other areas.

It's kind of like trying to explain Socrates without making refrence to the sophists, but harder because the ideas postmodernists reject don't really represent a "default position" in our society in the way the thought of Socrates' opponents do.

post modernism can actually be people saying nothing means anything anymore and everything is subjective, or it can be on the other hand people rejecting the concepts of proof, evidence, arguments, etc. as being utterly fraudulent, with everything being meaningful based on actual physical reactions towards beauty, value, safety, etc.

it could refer to someone painting a square on a piece of canvas and calling it art, or it could refer to someone spending their life attempting to re-chisel david from marble because modern art is inherently worthless.
