Didn't happen, wont happen in our lifetime...maybe in 100k years or so, maybe.

Many of the stars you see up there no longer exist, the light is just reaching us now from when they were alive. Many of the stars in the sky you can't see, because their light has not yet reached us.

Not true. 99.9% of the stars you can see with the naked eye still exist. End of life stars such as the mentioned Beatelgeuse are questionable as to whether they still exist or not (in their current visible form) but the VAST majority of visible stars are still in main sequence.

ETA: and the ones you can't see isn't because the light hasn't reached us it's because the magnitude (brightness) is too dim for the naked eye to detect)...you can see many more stars with a telescope.

The human eye can detect stars to about magnitude 6.5 to 7...a 10" telescope can see down to about 14th magnitude.

..the James Webb telescope can see 34th magnitude.

It wont go boom though. it will blow up and go supernove for a few weeks or months. the last one was in the 17th century and it was so bright it could be seen in the daytime.

but it already happened roughly 642 (and some change) years ago. its 642 lightyears away. so it mosts likely already happened.

Yeah I dont know much about telescopes as you do. I am farsighted and I can't see shit in the bay area because of light polution but if you get out in the western high desert region of north reno or close to idaho, it's one of the darkest areas of the lower 48 these days. I hope parkland moves in and buys up the rest of last because we don't need new towns popping up in nature fucking it up for the rest of the people who love to camp and see the skies only our ancestors were able to see more than 200 years ago and beyond.

its so rare now. You have to be in the middle of South America or Africa or maybe Australia outback to see the Milkyway-band with the naked eye. we're at the end of one of the arms that come off from the center. like a rotating spider. yep

we can see the tip of our own arm.

Nah, you can see it here in the US if you get out of the city. I have a place I go 80 miles west of Houston where you can see the milkyway and the land I just bought is in a similar spot..which is partly why I bought it in the first place (for the dark skies).

It's quite amazing when you look upon a dark sky after seeing "orange" light poluted city skies...even for someone who knows their way around the sky it can be quite tricky at first locating stars and objects due to all the extra stars filling the sky you are not used to seeing!

ETA You can see the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eye from a dark site, that's the furthest object a human can see, about 2.5 million light years away.
