That was all just God's dark sense of humor. The "Law" in those days was what was known as the Covenant: a contract the Jews agreed to with God. God saw that the Jewish priests were bullying and exploiting and micromanaging and brow-beating the people, so he turned the table on them. Here they were supposedly the representatives of God, and yet they were being wicked and evil with the people, exacting strict demands and financial requirements from them in the name of God. So God asked them how righteous they thought they were, and the evil leaders insisted they were beyond reproach, pure and noble. "Oh, is that right"", replied God. Then he offered them a personal contract, so that they would be able to prove how righteous and noble and pure they really were. It would provide them the opportunity to demonstrate the level of their Godly devotion. The evil fiends walked right into, because it's not like a fake and a fraud can refuse and reveal the scam. So God introduced many, many silly and meaningless requirements in the contract, the same kind of requirements the so-called "men of God" had imposed and forced onto the people, and he wrote them into the contract - the Covenant, If they followed all these ridiculous stipulations and rules in the contract, they could then rightly be declared the men of God they professed they really were. God chuckled. The evil leaders jumped at the chance to perpetuate their scam even further, thinking they could fool God himself. But it wasn't long before the whole region became fully aware the evil leaders were not following the stipulations in the Covenant - in the contract. They couldn't deny their true nature. Their corruption became on full display. Everyone and their dog could see they had violated the Covenant countless times. Then God stepped forth and judged the evil leaders to be in breach and in violation of the binding terms of the Covenant, which they all had voluntarily signed off on. In a legal sense, the evil leaders had broken the legally binding contract, and God was then legally and fairly able to break it and dispose of it. The Covenant had been broken by the evil Jewish leaders, proving to all the people that they were not really representatives of God, and no longer God's chosen people, by their own admission. The terms and requirements which were in the Covenant no longer apply to anyone, because it no longer exists. -
