what model was it?, I've been looking at the DJI Mini SE as a possible purchase.

It already had GPS. When I went over to it's last location it wasn't there.

    DJI Mini 2.

It was OK in use, but the way it died/ran off doesn't fill me with confidence.

one that will continue telling you its location. is there a way to continue monitoring it's location ? do you have a way to keep looking for its new location?

    and who steals drones, Woodhouse?

It cut communication and was never seen again. I went to the last location it reported being at, in a field, and it wasn't anywhere nearby. Maybe the fairies took it.

a GPS doesn't just stop. unless they placed it in a container that blocked its signal. I never owned one but if it was a Phone it would keep telling you it's location unless they were able to flash the drive and reinstall which I don't think the firmware on the drone would do. so in the future perhaps if it doesn't weigh to much, you can add an external micro GPS callback unit. I think there is a monthly fee of like 5-10 US Dollars but you're moneybags. invest in it and then go to the thieving cunts house and tell them that this violates a Junior Pilot's Oath to have your mini aeronautics device stolen. and in the Old days when Someone stole a workhorse that they were hung or shot in the fucking face right then and there. tell them you make money using it for video productions or some shit. make them feel ultra tiny.

it's possible the GPS module failed and it just kept going in the direction it was headed

If the GPS module failed then it should have kept contact with the controller.

If the radio chip failed then it should have returned to home (to the gps location of the controller) or slowly lowered altitude and landed.

It was windy, but not wet.

next time extra GPS or gut a cheap phone that weighs very little and google rig it "Find My Phone" and it will tell you where it is for free. if you have Cable Internet just set it up with free WiFi Access and it should get regional wide coverage for free.

like plane disappearing from radar, it just doesnt drop vertically onto the ground from where it last appeared on radar.

it will glide fro some distance, dependimg on its altitude, before touching the ground. if your drones power ran out mid flight and where its last gps coordinate was hundreds of feet above ground then the cone of its possible landing would be in the hundreds of meters.

how high was it when it disappeared.

They dont have wings. its a Drone Copter and when it loses power it just drops like brick. and even if it was a Plane Drone, they tend to drop straight down as well depending on the flaps position. or they corkscrew and spiral to its death.

Sorry to hear that. If there was a way to profit from it the loss would b more acceptable. Many people use them to transport drugs into prisons and lose them pretty quickly but they pay for themselves after the first run. There's a guy locally who had a young child go missing (amid rumors of kidnapping and murder) so he got a top of the line drone crowdsourced to "help him look for his kid" then started a company taking aerial photographs and other drone related stuff.

There's alot of uses for drones and if you're just solely using recreationally it will always be a loss. Maybe think of a way to offset the cost and justify purchasing another one

I thought a decent one could be purchased for like 150 bucks now but they're still in the 800-1200 range (800 for refurbished) with camera mounts I guess. but I would like one with a set of 3D goggles to see in real-time what it sees. not sure what those will set you back for a decent one. Still way too much money.

theyre not something with 0 aerodynamic drag coefficiencies so they are subjected to wind and its own innertia.

    your mentally unwell.
