It's when you buy a stock on margin (meaning you buy more than you have money to buy, so you technically are borrowing money to buy), then the stock drops in price, so you are asked to put up additional money to support your holdings.
In reality margin calls cause those who are margin called to sell.
For instance I sold Weatherford International back in June/July at a huge loss, now it's well above what I originally bought it at. Annoying.
