Your soul is actually basically the copies of you at any given time in your life when you existed (still exist) in the matrix. You're dead, but still living within the matrix at a different point in time. Because time is not actually linear. Reality exists in the past, the present and the future all at the same time in the matrix. So once you are introduced to the matrix, even if you die, you're still really there.
