My dad told me his grandfather thought he could see angels and tried to get my dad to be a preacher when he was like 5 years old despite never going to church. His mother used to think soap operas involved real persons. There has been mental health issues in every generation of that side of the family and mostly just substance use and dark family secrets on my moms. I know I'm fucked but I think if I have like 5 of 6 more children by the time I die who manage to break the intergenerational cycle of mental health and addiction issues WE WILL HAVE A CHANCE.

Nobody is authoring their own thoughts - nobody thinks about what they are going to think about before they think it. Our thoughts arise in our conscious mind out of subconscious processes which are influenced by our environment. It isn't really that different than vision. You aren't "inventing" the sights you see, your brain just processes the stimuli your eyes receive.
