Back in England I used to do a lot of canal fishing (right by the Kellogg's factory in Manchester because they spewed out warm water into the canal and the fish loved it).

Primary catch included, carp, pike, tench, bream, perch etc.

Unfortunately we caught a lot of what we called "Canal Trout" too.

It's a Canal trout...pretty commonly found in canals that have a pub nearby.

There are different types, like the one above, ones that have knobbly sides and even a couple that glow in the dark.

I'll be taking up sea fishing again soon (re: beach and pier fishing) as my new place is just 40 miles from the gulf coast. I'll have to familiarize myself with Gulf coast fish and what equipment is best, so far I've been told a heavy spinning rod with 20lb line.

I caught a 100+ lb tarpon in the GULF about ten years ago. Took me about 30 minutes from hook to get it to the boat. We were even under this causeway thing at one point and dude had to jump out of the boat into these pillar bases and switch the rod around a pillar to prevent the line from snapping. Quite the experience/workout tbh fam.

From shivering in the cold and catching Canal Trout outside the kellogs factory in Manchester to being a bronzed well honed shirtless figure captured in the waning sunlight while reeling in a monster shark from the Gulf of Mexico.

    Who'd have thunk it.
