Maciej Wieslaw Lata, 24, pleaded innocent Friday to one count of communicating with a minor with intent to commit lewd or lascivious acts and two counts of attempting to arrange meetings with a minor with intent to commit lewd or lascivious acts. If convicted, he faces between five and seven years in prison and would be required to register as a sex offender.
Lata’s mommy was trying to arrange to move him to Palo Alto.
“She contacted (the bail bond company) to see if it was OK,” Posas said. He also questioned police reports that Lata was packing a suitcase with a passport and green card “on his person” when he was arrested the second time.
Latas mommy first posted a $10,000 bail bond after being arrested May 26 at Lely Aquatic Park in Orland. After a judge revoked and reset Lata’s bail to $500,000 at the request of Orland police, bounty hunters took him into custody May 30 at his Chico home.
Lata attempted twice to meet the girl. At the first meeting May 16 in Aquatic Park, Lata reportedly struck up a conversation with an undercover officer and asked if anyone had seen the 12-year-old. The girl’s family filed for a restraining order against Lata on May 28. In court documents, the family claimed Lata told the girl “that he thinks about her constantly” and offered to massage her neck.
