Empty Planet Book Discussion

I'm only halfway done with it.

An award-winning journalist and leading international social researcher make the provocative argument that the global population will soon begin to decline, dramatically reshaping the social, political, and economic landscape

For half a century, statisticians, pundits, and politicians have warned that a burgeoning population will soon overwhelm the earth's resources. But a growing number of experts are sounding a different alarm. Rather than continuing to increase exponentially, they argue, the global population is headed for a steep decline—and in many countries, that decline has already begun.

In Empty Planet, John Ibbitson and Darrell Bricker find that a smaller global population will bring with it many benefits: fewer workers will command higher wages; the environment will improve; the risk of famine will wane; and falling birthrates in the developing world will bring greater affluence and autonomy for women.

But enormous disruption lies ahead, too. We can already see the effects in Europe and parts of Asia, as aging populations and worker shortages weaken the economy and impose crippling demands on healthcare and social security. The United States and Canada are well-positioned to successfully navigate these coming demographic shifts--that is, unless growing isolationism leads us to close ourselves off just as openness becomes more critical to our survival than ever.

Rigorously researched and deeply compelling, Empty Planet offers a vision of a future that we can no longer prevent--but one that we can shape, if we choose.

really like how no one wants to have kids as soon as they're educated, without religion people are selfish as hell, I didn't realize other people felt like I do and felt bad for being a fag and not giving my mom children yet (i turned 29, she's 64 next month) but now I realized that straight people too and she doesn't like non whites so it probably helps that i won't race mix cuz I don't fuck or date white people and love creampieing all sex partners

Someone once told me that we need to be nice to black people now so they will be nice to us in the future.

I think that, looking at how black people treat each other, if your plan involves getting them to be nice to you, you are screwed.

gotta keep in mind how vague and inaccurate statistics gathering is in most of Africa (and the third world in general) when making predictions like this

    Precisely

ASERIOUS disorder of the immune system that has been known to doctors for less than a year - a disorder that appears to affect primarily male homosexuals - has now afflicted at least 335 people, of whom it has killed 136, officials of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta said yesterday. Federal health officials are concerned that tens of thousands more homosexual men may be silently affected and therefore vulnerable to potentially grave ailments.

I don't have much problem assimilating into black culture, I think the Haitians consider themselves black. Let me impart to you all some wisdom.

Loudness = Strength. I do not talk quietly, mostly yell. Even in two person conversations inside, I don't give a fuck (Why would I?)

Come up with a clever name, usually this involves a single word description or a letter related to you. I have chosen to highlight my skin color. White Brad. Sometimes they think it's White Bread. Perfect.

Be willing to fight constantly. I throw things at people, get louder, and am not afraid of getting beat up. YMMV

Contribute almost nothing to society but wear a great adornment of jedielery/nice sneakers, this will project your value to others.

Date outside your race (hella power move for me was ignoring White girls and telling them I don't fuck white girls cuz it feels like I'm sleeping with my cousin).

Make sure everyone knows where you are from (You must choose a major city) and know the area code as though it was more important than you name.

    In example:
I am White Brad from the 414 Milwaukee North Side and carry a knife everywhere I go. I actually carry three, but that's an aside.

You just need to capitulate to the black culture.

(For Westerners in North America, I have no idea what it's like to be European because as I mentioned, I'm just a dope boy from the nort' side)

I also talk much much blacker than I ever did in Milwaukee but still dress like Mr. Rodgers.

It can, but not for more than a few years, and not at a high standard of living.

we've only been able to extract materials from a few hundred metres into the Earth's crust and we've exhausted almost all of the major deposits at that depth

if modern industry were to collapse tomorrow there'd be no way for us to extract enough iron (let alone exotic metals) to rebuild it

I wonder if this has been the cycle; we've always destroyed ourselves before we're able to dig deep enough to solve scarcity problems and just keep re-using the decaying remnants of previous, millennia-old civilisations

so as women get more educated they have less kids and use contracepts also this correlates with urbanized.

I agree, but I'm pretty sure this is our first go-around. We've done so much damage to the geology of the planet that the scars will surely last until the sun turns into a red giant and consumes the earth in a few billion years. Geologists even call this era we are living in the anthropocene, the human era.

I think we not only deplete our mineral riches, we deplete our human riches as well with dysgenic breeding patterns. For instance look at the people who made the first civilisations, the people who have been urbanised for thousands of years, and look at how they compare to people who haven't been urbanised.

i slept on this post, great insight. I'd be curious to see if the shit we'd already pulled out of the earth and refined could be further utilized by men to scavange the iron/basic metals from shit laying around and then trying to make it work for the purposes of just building simple tools and structures. Overall I think a lot of the decaying generation after the collapse of society would be spent just scavenging and trying to find additional resources by moving around from place to place. It'll be 100 years or more before people have to legitimatly source their own living materials, fuck off if you want cadium and platinum and some gay ass transisters and bullshit

like OK bro we're gonna stab u with a sharpened soda can on the end of a stick
