Mixed Japanese in Korea were given higher status than the locals and people would purposely have mixed babies and change their names for the increased status that was afforded. If it went another generation, there would have been a kich bigger erosion of traditional Korean culture, which has always been hard to define because of the 3 cultures there and all the colonial influence. I know you said "colonies" which can include imperialism. It was the same way in Manchucko, Japanese were good at instilling a more efficient system in place (although it usually resulted in resource rape) quickly

I'm not sure what you meant by a "coherent culture" though, do you mean a well functioning and efficient dominant class? I remember reading Sowells writings about Malay culture where the 10%$ Chinese managed to dominate despite their systematic oppression.
I think slavery had to have a free market capitalist component to incentivize and separate the wheat from the chaff nahmean and allow individuals to elevate themselves if they're capable. Otherwise there are definitely efficiencies lost
