The 12 steps all rely on a belief of a higher power than yourself...that right there is why I could never do them.

there are secular sobriety groups. But a lot of it is faith based and people that become christfags after they stop being USING addicts, they will just tell you a higher power doesn't have to be God, you might be the only one there not "playing along"

Just imagine trying to come off hard drugs in a rehab and people around you getting down on their knees crying I ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO MY HEART AND I WILL NEVER USE DRUGS AGAIN!!! and then they all look at you with a judging stare because your "higher power" is Donald Trump or something autistic.

You know what they are thinking "This guy should just go back to using, this isn't the place for him"

When my ex was in NA I went along with her to offer support and was disgusted by the glorification of drugs those idiots did...the whole "class" was people telling stories of their drug fueled days and everyone else laughing and clapping the worse it got. They had a guest speaker who was some reformed prostitute that also just sat there telling stories for everyone to laugh at... Then the whole 12 step thing was spoken about and like 8 out of the 12 steps (as I recall) involved some higher power...what a load of bullshit.

Basically if you don't believe in god or a "higher power" you're fucked as far as the stupid 12 steps go.

ETA: The class was in a house behind the church..when we got there there were some lowly folk hanging outside and I asked "Is this the NA class?"

Some clown came over and hugged me...I said "I'm not the drug addict, she is"

Have you ever had addiction issues?

If you think you're the biggest force in the world/your life you're sadly mistaken. People use anything as a higher poeer with probably variable results. If you just stick to a rigid definition just to prevent yourself from self reflection you're probably fedoracally challenged and won't get anything of value from it.

My dad got kicked out of rehab and swore off meetings and that scene forever.

But he always kept the book with Bills Story and sometimes he would smoke crack and pull out his NA book and read bills story. I think Bill is his higher power

Ive literally run into so many of my old dealers and they ALL FUCKING SAY , great job dude you look good as fuck im glad u doing good bro bro, u were always a legit mother fucker and still are it seems and then we exchange numbers as friends and they hit me up if they need to ask me something or just anything and i do the same to them.

You shoulda spit on them. Recovery comes from inside yourself not from sitting in a circle doing rituslistic magic and drinking coffee and planning when your next meeting will be for fuck sake.

    Yup

The hard core groupies are like a cult

The meetings devolve into a “can you top this” discourse

If you want to quit…just quit. AA and NA are a joke

It's questionable if I was addicted to alcohol...I drank a lot but don't consider it an addiction because I easily quit cold turkey one day after decades of drinking everyday.

I dont get the correlation though in being an addict and believing in a higher power..the two are unrelated. If I was addicted to alcohol (as my doctor would say I was), then my thoughts on "Higher powers" were no different then than the are now...that being there is no higher power than "the self".

My friends dad was a clean goes to weekly meetings type for like 20+ years that was his entire lifestyle but when weed became legal he said fuck all this and became a hardcore pothead smoking shatter from a rig (he used to be a meth head)

He is also against alcohol I can't remember if he went to NA or AA.

Exactly...100% agree. Those classes were doing more harm than good from everything I observed...How dumb to gather all the fucking addicts in the neighborhood together...talk about the misery loves company theory.

i started a marijuana club where we would take in people withdrawing from heroin/coke, depressed, hungover, terminally ill, good/bad trips and basically anyone that wanted to smoke weed and we smoke a bunch of weed with them for free.

along with the sharing of ideas and information. It was also a drinking club, but the beer wasn't free. No hard drug use allowed

if weed was legal at the time I might have considered opening a cafe. abusing hard drugs is bad but we aren't going to judge you for being a coke freak, also if you have cocaine I will totally buy some just meet me at marijuana club to discuss it.

Doesn't sound like you had a pathological compulsive addiction towards alcohol as you managed to quit on your own accord

The "higher power" comes from turning your will over to a higher power and submitting the way one submits to a deity who is more powerful than them

Neitzche is a literal faggot. You are not the most powerful thing in the universe you just lack imagination

The A.A. approach is tried tested and true for a certain kind of addict, it's not for everyone but nothing is. Be grateful you managed to overcome substances without help because not everyone is so fortunate. "Whote knuckling it" rarely works for deep seeded issues that substance abuse is a symptom of. When I drank everyday for years (and also for months as a teenager) I was physically ill and shook/couldn't sleep had many physical/mental effects that required some kind of substitute. That seems to usually be the case with people who define their use as addiction

Yes I get the theory, I just don't accept it as valid. Again there is NO higher power than the self..."Passing the buck" is not a good way to get over something, acceptance of your shortcomings and then doing what you need to so to build the strength to overcome those shortcomings is > than any fairy tale "higher power".

If you don't believe in higher powers, be that a god/deity/or the rich fella down the street then it's impossible to submit to one..and I don't believe there is a higher power than myself.

If I have unhealthy desires such as taking drink/drugs/killing hookers etc then chit chatting to a higher power isn't going to solve anything...as no matter what the higher power came up with..my self will is going to say "Fuck that, what do you know...pretty sure I know myself better than you do buddy/buddette/Buddha"

It all falls back into the personal responsibility category...you only have yourself to blame and only you can fix it.

Additionally what kind of life lesson is it to suggest to people "Hey, put yourself in XXX hands rather than assume the responsibility yourself"...

    Fucking millenials!
