2017-04-30 at 12:17 AM UTCSo some jerks have started register accounts with usernames that are visually very similar or identical to existing users. This is known as a "homoglyph attack", it's kind of interesting but it's actually troublingly difficult to address without impacting full unicode support. To try and limit the impact of this kind of username spoofing I've implemented "trip phrases", an idea floated by Bret Victor a couple of years ago. The context is a little different, Victor was thinking in context of chan style tripcodes, password base "authentication" by obfuscation of the password. In this case your trip phrase is generated from your username and is sensitive to homoglyphs, so you can't brute force someone else's trip phrase.
So what does this actually mean for you? If you go to your profile page and enable tripcodes a 5 word phrase will be displayed most places your username appears. Impostors won't be able to use the same trip phrase, so people can distinguish you from a potential impostor by noting the absence or difference in trip phrase. Unlike user titles it's not tied to post counts so spamming like §m£ÂgØL-impostor did won't be possible.
Will the phrases be visually distinctive enough for this scheme to work? Hey, who knows, but I encourage you to guinea pig it for me so we can find out.

It's not everyone that's permabanned, only people who used the "anonymize" feature. It assigns all your posts to that account, which is banned, and then bans your base account. like over 80% of that account is sploo, for some reason he does this every couple of weeks which kinda defeats the purpose because the entire idea is to make it non-obvious who the original poster was but w/e. -

Yee, the hope is that it serves the "got doxxed, coworkers reading my goatsex fetish threads" case without destroying the coherency of threads, so far it seems to have done pretty well, although it looks a bit odd when you have multiple people doing this in the same thread.

I keep the IP addresses on the posts, I don't want to scrub them. Catching a charge for destroying evidence is not what I'm looking for here. -
