   I actually dug pretty deep into it at some point.
   
   What seems to have happened was that a low-level CIA analyst 'extracted HumInt' (see: tortured a captured fighter until he started talking nonsense), then passed the information up the chain. His superiors told him they couldn't verify or action it because there was no supporting evidence, so he leaked it to the media and everything after that was a mix of partisan mudslinging and damage control
