How do I get a new rood claiming hail damaged it?

   I hear people all the time saying how they got insurance to pay for new siding, gutters and roofs due to hail and wind damage.
   The house Im in now would benefit from such claims.
   Do I need some sort of inspection?
   Will throwing ice cubes on the roof and taking a picture suffice?
