I ordered a basic one, supposed to arrive this week. Honestly they seem really shitty, smaller than a book, harder to read and not at all durable, you basically allow the ADL to delete whatever books they like (like how Culture of Critique got shoahed from Amazon cos jedis had no answer to it), it's got a shit battery, and you will inevitably forget to take it with you. Seems like a mobile phone + laptop is better in every conceivable way.
I only ordered it cos it comes with a 2 week return period.
Anyone actually use these?

yeah I've got one of the really simple ones, had it for years
it works ok and I like the display even though the refresh rate is extremely slow. never used the online service though, just copy files over like a usb stick. the only annoying thing is that it only accepts.a very narrow set of formats so you have to convert epubs, pdfs etc. to mobi for it to recognise them

Got the Kindle today. I actually really like it. It's light and fairly cool looking and has a fairly decent display so long as you are using the backlight. It's much easier to read on than my phone. It also does audiobooks despite not having speakers, so I paired my bluetooth speaker and played a bit of one of my audiobooks. I was even able to send some books to it (in mobi format) using an email address that amazon sets up for you, so it's very easy to sideload your files onto it.
It came already knowing my Amazon email address, which is kinda weird, but it's what I requested. I don't like the way the device goes to screensaver when it turns off, you can't change that setting, I think maybe that's due to some odd copyright issues. I don't like that it has micro usb instead of usb c.
I dunno how much I will use it to read, I don't generally have the time, patience or attention span to read anymore, but it's a nice little gimmicky toy for the price and I'll probably keep it.
Probably it'll wind up like my DSLR, way better than my phone's camera, but I never carry it with me so it doesn't matter.

Worth it, e ink display is the best way to read ebooks by far
I have a kindle paperwhite and it's a great little device
I used to be one of the fags who preferred paper books but really a kindle is so much lighter and easier to handle than most books and the other "benefits" are mostly just about me not initially being used to ebooks as much as paper books.

I have an old one and liked it but I found I would have to keep changing the brightness everytime I used it depending on the environment it was in. I got it new in 2013 or 2014 so they undoubtedly have much better ones now. I was actually thinking of getting another one very recently so this thread is a sign for me to do just that
