How could I hypothetically repeat this situation

For my apartment rent, I have an option where I can pay using cash or debit(including Vanilla Visa gift card) at a store location. I usually keep a large credit balance on the account.

I went to a retail store two weeks ago to pay $500 via a Vanilla gift card. When the lady put in the information and submitted it, it just spun an icon. After a few minutes it went back to the previous screen. She tried running it again and it did the same thing. She told me that the system was down and that I could come back tomorrow.

I checked today and both actually went through. They were never charged back, at least not yet and it's been two weeks.

How could someone hypothetically create a DOS that causes this to happen again?

I have no experience with DOS attacks. Is it basically find the IP of the web server that handles the transactions and running an attack on it right when she enters the data? Or would one need to do the attack on their local network.

    Either way I'm up $1k.

No, because I made a payment this weekend.

I haven't cleaned my closet yet. I cleaned my living room, kitchen, and bathroom. My bedroom is next and I plan to clean my closet when I clean my bedroom.

There really isn't that much to clean in my closet. Some old shirts that I'll replaced. Some batteries in RC toys need to be replaced. I might throw out some old work boots. There is a bag of items I need to return to retail stores for gift cards.

There was probably some error with the data encoded in the chip or magnetic strip. Minor enough that normal machines can still process the data but for some reason the way this machine handles the fault is by running some routines and just reset the process if that doesn't hapnen. The lady probably just says 'the system is down' every time a malfunction of some sort occurred. Most likely she didn't mean DoS had occurred somewhere along the line. If you wanna be pedantic the service was denied, but in the same way a hurricane denies service to a fence in it's path.
