There will never be a cure for cancer, for starters there are hundreds of different types of cancer and cancer is basically cell mutation which is going to be pretty impossible to cure until we have some next level Star Trek technology. Cell mutation isn't really something you can target like a virus or bacteria. Throwing money at Cancer research is just a waste of money. -

There are lots of differences between a cancer cell and a normal cell that you can target, like differences in respiration, differences in reproduction rate (this is what chemo does), etc. There are also lots of neglected cancer treatments and diets out there, none are 100%, but some are quite effective.
A combination of treatments works best, obviously, however if you have cancer Doctors will generally only try one treatment at a time, because they don't really care and they want the statistics. -

Sure, the problem is a lot of people don't even know they have it till it's too late. I've lost my two best friends in the last 5yrs to cancer they didn't know they had till it was too late (to late for surgery and too late for other treatments).
I don't really think of targeted treatment as a "cure" either. -

I had a pre cancer which had it not been removed I would have got Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
I also show signs of CLL blood lukemia but slow
It killed my step bro and cousin and I believe a fucking cats scratch fever caused all of us to have got this

Not to mention unrelated early signs of lung damage with a need for steroid inhalers the rest of my life. Thanks to pops overalls covered in asbestos from the steel mill in Fucking Oakland CA
