turns out the whole 'necklacing' thing originated in Africa, where they throw a tyre full of petrol around your neck and light it
only traditionally, they don't light it. they leave the lighter within arm's reach, then stab you and hit you with hammers and shit until you light yourself up

the specific example the book used was broken fingers and toes and stabbing needles up the nose so I assume they know to try and keep it non-lethal

South Africa is a pretty fucked up and unique place you can't extrapolate onto blacks altogether. That would be like judging white people based on Appalachia or Asians on Phillipino conduct. There are like 50 ethnic groups and 700 languages in SA. Language is a medium for expression and black people are more prone to inventing vernacular, terms and expressions than most other races, you see this is north America far more prevalently than other groups inventing terms (instead they typically co opt black language and make it universal).
Anyway I'll read the rest when I get the chance because I really like reading about Africa but it seems like it's written by a victim
