I got n HP Notebook - 15-bs212wm sitting here that I agreed to take a look at for my girlfriend's father.
It get's passed the Windows 10 log in screen and is completely frozen beyond that point.
I can hear the old hard drive scratching around leading me to believe it's fucked.
This POS is probably only a few hears old but its got a damn celeron processor, 4gb of ram and a damn 5400rpm SATA drive.
I hate how they release trash in something shiny and rip people off.
Anyways, beyond replacing the HDD with and SSD, I was looking to see if the ram was upgradable to 8gb so it at least can use the internet these days and I've got some people online saying "no it's not" and others saying "yes you can" but even the yes people said you can only top it out to 8gb of ram if you keep it the same speed.
Now given the overall crapiness of the lappy, do you think it's even worth trying to save?
The old man just wants to send e-mails and use Word Perfect on it.
Later I plan on sticking a usb stick with puppy linux on it to see how well the rest of the parts in it work but I'm going to guess "slow"
In the meantime I'm going to try and get into the bios and do some basic shit in there to see if that tells me anymore.

2022-03-15 at 7:20 PM UTCProbably Windows core system files were corrupted. You can use a BOOT DISK and FDISK and FORMAT, then use MS-DOS CHKDSK to write off bad sectors on the disk, but new ones will quickly appear, over time.

2022-03-17 at 5:03 PM UTCI reinstalled Windows 10 on it.
That's all I opted to do.
There are mixed results when it comes to trying to add more ram to this specific model laptop and given what it is, it's not worth even throwing $30 at.
Last summer I bought a laptop with the same specs for $30 at a gas station in Springfield and fixed it with an old yet working hard drive I got off someone for free.
With the very limited upgrades I can do it's worth it to save the money and buy a more capable laptop off ebay and fix up. -
2022-03-17 at 7 PM UTCI recently heard of a case in Florida where a guy named Frederico capicola or something did laptop repair on this rich retired xouple and saw they had CP on their computer so he went over and tried to extort him, the old guy pulled a handgun on him, they struggled and he shothim, then killed his wife because she was a witness. He was sentenced to 50 years and they treated both murders as similar when one was self defense of a pedophile and the other was his enabler. He should have been charged with criminal negligence causing death for the bitch and nothing for the pedo. How tf is that in the interest of justice to prosecute?
Oh yea he was black in Florida and had a record that included bank robbery, and he was dumb and lied about it at first which made jt look alot worse, prob because he was scared. Fucking sin
Edit: his friend ratted on him hard too -
2022-03-17 at 7:16 PM UTCYears ago I was port scanning IP ranges for open ports and found one box that had CP on it, so I copied all the CP to a folder on his desktop, then set up an activity notification through ICQ and waited for him to go on his computer. When he finally came on and I got the notification, I went in and checked the desktop and the folder was gone, so I undeleted it and waited to see what he'd do. He deleted it again, so I undeleted it again. Then I forced open a two-way chat window (with no x) on his desktop and said "HELLO". He responded, "Are you on my computer right now??" And I said, "Yes. I am". Then he started begging "Why are you doing this to me??", and I said, "Because you're a pedo." Then he hit the power button and rebooted, but as soon as he was up again I forced the chat window open again on his desktop. Then he hit the power button again and left it off, but I got a notification as soon as he booted back up an hour or so later and forced the chat window open again on his desktop and undeleted the files again. He was begging to "just leave me alone!!" Then I put HardDriveKiller Pro 4 into a batch file in his C: root and forced a reboot. Checked in on him for days after... GONE.
