from polak forums:
„ behind closed doors, the United states strongly hinted to Poland that they should give their planes to Ukraine.
Poland knows this is a pretty risky play and refused to limit test and end up as a scapegoat (yet again), so they suggested they give the US the planes if they want them so much, and then they can be the ones to manage the delivery.
Thus the US immediately leaked the story to their own press and started playing dumb, claiming this was never discussed and a complete blindside on the part of the Polish.
Couple of corrections. Poland never suggested it wants to "swap" it's jets for modern ones as a trade of them giving their jets to Ukraine. Poland wishes to give those jets, completely free of charge, to Ukraine by way of United states. To replace those jets, it is then willing to purchase new ones from the United States. At no point was this an attempt to wheel and deal for profit or discount. If Poland can be accused of anything it's trying to get the US to sell their modern jets in the first place, as the US is incredibly protective of their equipment, and despite attempts to appear otherwise, it is very unwilling to sell to even NATO members. Correction, actually, it is very willing to sell the equipment, but the delivery is another story.
For instance, the Patriot missile defense system, two of which the US has "graciously" deployed into Poland yesterday, on an "accelerated timeline" were in fact already bought and paid for by Poland over a year ago, and haven't been delivered until now. The US did not gift these systems, they sold them, and now they want to make it seem like they're the heroes by delivering them in the first place, something they should have done months ago”
