That looks to be the aftermath of an explosion with a significant amount of oomph. If it is by design having ground zero be at an abandoned place is perfect cover. Bad maintenance is a plausible scenario. Only downside is, if you can call it a downside is that you need quite the explosive device to level a couple of houses in the immediately surrounding area. But again, with a vacant house, you have all the time in the world to make your preparations.
Generally collateral damage is considered bad but if it obfuscates the intended target(s) that's definitely going to work out in your favor. From a forensic standpoint at least.
