    JIT only works if the world is stable and you have large amounts of free capacity, abundant natural resources, and competent labour to make and transport goods. It's part of the whole low-inflation, low-wages regime that existed from the 90s up to the pandemic in 2020. It was a weird time in the history of the world, and it's over now.

    Half my job is standing around waiting for product and the other half is chatting with co workers and working slowly so what little product I have lasts all day so I don't stand too much doing nothing

    Just in time. It basically means that you can time shipments with such accuracy that if you have a car factory for instance, there is no need to move parts into a warehouse, and then move them onto the line as needed. You don't retain stock, you just order what you need for the week, so the parts go directly from the factory/ship/plane to the production line. As a result you benefit from having the latest parts available without needing to pay for warehousing or maintaining inventory.
    
    So long as things go as planned everything is good, and you can save money with this approach. Obviously there are rather substantial downsides if things don't go as planned, but the approach arose in Japan in the 90s, where things were nice and orderly, and the rather insubstantial cost savings that could be achieved seemed worth pursuing by ambitious management thinkers.
