based on my falling into the Wisconsin River (once) the milwaukee river (six) and the First Branch of Pestigo (twice) I can assure, I know exactly what it takes to swim in a current through ice water,
my god it is horrifying as fuck, the only good part is if you piss yourself the water is going so fast and your so locked up that no one knows if/when they revive you
I've been under ice like under an ice sheath only twice, both times were fucking horrible i remember seeing the sun through glass i couldn't break and i just kept moving fast and faster
the other times i was just drunk and slipped and if i fell in i just swam to shore nbd

imagine being 12 and all your dipshit friends are running accross the frozen creek (a like stream that fed into the milwaukee) and so your dumbass does it once, then someone grabs you cuz the ice is breaking and your friend and you fall onto your back on the fun icey surface
and you and him are in 1 foot of water and 2 foot of just mud, like creek guck, and the water starts clipping, my friend got out the same hole, i went a lot farther cuz i for some reason thought i should just like go with it and ended up in the milwqukee river where it wasn't frozen over and got to a bank/through my body against the ice surface and it was cool
i was frozen solid and had to walk like 2 miles home from there but then this girl i knew named Kate let my friend and I in and i went and bathed and everyone made fun of me for having a small weiner cuz I was frozen
my mom didn't believe me and thought i did something bad cuz i came home showered and said iw as just cold at my friends house

i dont liek kids very much i kinda like really don't like that they gank up my fishing spots here and there but because if ish primarily int he last two years like the milwaukee river & SW Lake Michigan, a lot of Not White people let their kids just frollick in this riveri and like they dont' do it when it's whipping by but shit like normally it's 4-5MPH, I can't swim more than 3MPH tbh and im a pretty good swimmer, to think a river with your kids without PFDs is kinda sad
IO told my second if i ever see some lil kid start drowning IDGAF I dont' have a lot to live for, I'mma swim at them, and I know how to fireman carry over my shoulder while swimming, but like a grown ass man, i wouldn't do it for
