1. Russia retook the Crimea, which was given to the Ukraine in the 60s by Kruschev, as a response to the US-backed coup that deposed the democratically-elected government. It has been part of Russia longer than the Ukraine has been a state, and has been petitioning to rejoin Russia almost since it was handed over.
2. There is no evidence Russia controls the rebels in the Donbass.
3. Russia has reactivated 2 armored brigades 200km inside their border because the Ukraine can no longer be considered a neutral 'buffer' zone as was agreed upon when the USSR disintegrated. Look at a map, specifically how close Moscow is to the border.
4. Putin threatened 'military-technical' measures if NATO refused to respect the 'buffer zone' that they promised they would. This is why all of Russia's (reasonable) demands have been released publicly, in writing, and they expect any response in writing. -
