Currently listening to the audiobook of the Unnatural History of the Sea by Callum M. Roberts. It's all about how people have over and over consumed all the resources of the ocean. For instance the west shore of America used to be covered with seals, massive colonies. Early explorers and colonists report San Fancisco bay being black with seals. As a result hunters went and killed them all, selling the pelts and the oil.
Other examples are the herring harvests in medieval europe, when there were so many caught they were used as fertiliser. Places like Chesapeake bay were covered in oysters, and they were caught with dredgers, which also destroyed the habitat and meant no new oysters could grow. The systematic extermination of whales is another thing discussed. Another is the constant over-fishing of cod, which, because so much more fish is extracted than is sustainable, again and again causes fish stocks to collapse. Trawling is another nasty practice discussed.
Anytime we look to the past we see that the oceans were so much better and more productive than now.
I like the book as it's not a hit piece on whitey like most environmentalism I encounter, it goes into detail on what non-whites did to the environment too (especially when they were provided with western technology, like guns). The writer comes across as genuinely concerned for the future and for the state of the worlds oceans.
Mostly it's just really depressing and shocking book. The common theme is that humans see a resource, they over-exploit it, and they destroy it for everyone. This hasn't changed - for instance look at how we are over-exploiting our oil and gas reserves.

This is an issue close to my heart, for my heart belongs to the ocean, alas I cannot communicate freely on this matter as I worry of identifying factors. Boourns
