2021-12-14 at 6:38 PM UTCthey banned steel toe; I'm told (Can I get a herd) at most warehouse jobs. because if a forklift runs over your feet it just mangles the toes like hamburger meat. if the toe just has a normal pair of leather fronts, the forklift will just smash your toes, allowing any broken bones or flesh in the toes to heal.

I don't think your source of information is very reliable. -

2021-12-15 at 8:17 AM UTCIt only take 5800 pounds to cut your toe off with steel toe plates in the boots.
5800 pounds from a wheel running over a boot without steel toe plates however may break bones in the toe or cause serious muscle tearing or smashing of limbs and the toenail might be damaged of either falling off or not growing back ever again. but with a steel toe plate, at 5800 pounds the metal plate would cut your toes right in half.
and a forklift might only weigh 2000 pounds at best, but if it has a shitload of metal pipes or furniture and the forklift front wheel runs over your toe, it could crush the steel toe plate enough to cut off the top portion of the feet, usually just over the toe region itself
So Yes, it's a real thing. Its best just to wear regular work boots -

the issue is that when a heavy load drops on the steel toe, it can compress the steel down onto your toes forcing amputation because they can't pry the cap back open with your toes in there
a lot of them use plastic or composites now because they shatter under pressure rather than deforming -
