Unusual wireless disconnects

  1. #1
Just now, my computer dropped the signal to my router. It failed to reconnect, saying the credentials have changed since I was last connected, and prompted for a password. I closed the dialog box, and decided to reconnect again. I'm now connected fine. Could it be a phishing attempt for my wpa key? Could it be related to me signing up here? I think we both know the answer to that question...

    Maybe?

Routers are stupid. That being said, you're probably not getting phished, probably. WiFi deauthentication attack seems way more likely. Perhaps your neighbors are sniffing for WPA handshakes and are trying to expedite the process by sending deauth frames.

A WiFi phishing attack involves deauthenticating the user as well, but you have to set up an evil AP that looks exactly like your AP and then serve some kind of web app or whatever to ask for whatever credentials the attacker wants. Seems like a lot of trouble to do to some random nigga.

You're probably right, though once I enter my APs passphrase into a hostile router, an attacker should be able to log into my network with the passphrase I provided their AP. Then, they've got all my unencrypted traffic, and can start analyzing my machines for further exploitation.

    Pretty weird, huh?

If by weird you mean, "government conspiracy", then yes.

Does your router support logging? If so go to your interface usually at 192.168.1.1 or similar, then log in and check your logs if someone has been sending deauth frames i think you should be able to tell. Put their MAC on a blacklist for your router firewall. That should be the end of that, unless they spoof MAC regularly.

Also with regards to an adversary getting access to your network. It's a little more involved than you make it out to be. SSL traffic will still be encrypted for instance, as will SSH and SFTP. If there are multiple machines on your local network that can talk to each other then an attacker can move laterally from one machine to another. It is important to set proper authentication for networks such as a Home Group on Windows for instance. User permissions for guests on the network should be very strict as well.

It probably supports logging, but I'm honestly not sure. As for someone inside my network, I have a machine running Snort to check for unauthorized activity.

If I see one of my neighbors sending multiple deauth frames, I'll make sure their router doesn't stop receiving the same. Capturing the handshake is ok, but forcing my machine is reconnect beyond that is completely unnecessary.

Seems like a lot of people are experiencing internet connection problems. RisiR even went so far as to imply it was my fault because i was talking about WiFi attacks. I mean, this h4xx1ng stuff seems like black magic to the lay person but blaming me for your internet issues is stretching it.

You upset? Maybe you should consider being polite and not calling me niggerfuck and demand answers immediately when i don't reply to your questions within 5 minutes of you posting them.

Whatever "game" i am talking is a direct consequence of you being rude to me.
