2021-11-26 at 7:35 PM UTCWathched da vid, that looks pretty cool. I was gonna say that I don't see the point of steamdeck unless youre a student or you're on a bus, plane, or train often. But I see that it's got some muscle and it's a lot cheaper than a gaming lappy. That's pretty cool that you can do da docking with just the USB connection ( just cool in general, i think thats available on some newer lappys too ). I would add a second memory card slot, include a cellular modem in the design, and make the battery pack swappable to make it perfecto.
I've been looking at some of the cheaper gaymer laptops around $1000-1200 , mostly they have GTX 3050 or 3060 and 11th gen i7.This is Valve we're talking about. No corners will be cut, the end result will be excellent. Unfortunately, that requires it to be developed in Valve Time.
(That also means the second one will be the best portable device ever created, and there will never be a third one.)

2021-11-27 at 12:02 AM UTCJust get a second hand ThinkPad or similar and upgrade the memory as you can afford it. Some miserable riced and overhyped gaming console won't satisfy you. It's basically steam contoller 2.0.

2021-11-27 at 12:16 AM UTCThere is no way I could get a laptop with a decent graphics card for around $500. I already have a thinkpad and it struggles to play 1.18 minecraft
Getting another laptop seems like it would be a waste. The computer I use now works perfectly fine, it just can't play top of the line games. This really seems like the best bang for my buck the more I think about it -

If you buy into the hype. If you buy into the hype, enjoy your 10fps or way turned down graphic qualities.
Just get a second hand lappy. Or get a second hand desktop and graphics card. My graphics card is second hand, its a 1060, works great. -

…
oh shit, i havent tried on mine yet. it does O.K. running two clients in a 1.17 game at the same time ( takes it a while to get the framerates up but good after a minute or two once everything has settled ) for basic purposes. But trying to be near certain redstone/machinery builds like a moss-based bonemeal farm or the automatic tree pharms, it kinda sux and bounces below 10fps with just one client running.
I got luv for the thinkpads but the used market around the 5 or 600 dollar mark was still fairly old models and mostly still just dual-core CPUs and integrated graphics. also to get a new lappy from lenovo a lot of models or configurations are 2-4+ month backorder -

I don't see how i'm buying into the hype. I haven't seen any info saying the hardware is bad or that it can't support what they are claiming it can run. I think the mid range model is a bit overpriced and kinda bullshit how you are mainly just paying for internal storage.
Besides that though it seems totally worth it's value. It's not advertising to play ultra HD 4K wide 120 FPS.
I'm kinda curious how quickly I could max out a steam deck with dwarf fortress. I still have my 1fps save file
If I could get a desktop PC or laptop with a modern graphics card for $550 I would. I really don't want to spend any more than that. Maybe some cheap gaming laptop goes on sale around boxing day but if I can't find anything by the time the steam deck comes out I will probably get that
I think my laptop could maybe run Rust on potato settings right now

Yeah I know that feel. The game just feels slower and slower the more they work on it. Loading up a new world in 1.8.9 takes about 10 seconds. Loading a new 1.18 world takes a few minutes until the game starts to be smooth and loading new chucks is a big laggy
Definitely the CPU and graphics card seem to be the issue -
2021-11-27 at 1:10 AM UTCFor $800 I could get
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4 GB GDDR6
Intel Core i5 10th Gen 10500H (2.50 GHz)

Have you ever used a Wii U or Switch in tablet mode? It's actually genuinely an amazing convenience to just hang out on the couch or bed and play a videogame. I've liked handheld consoles all my life for that reason. Honestly the DS line was never comfortable for me. The GBA was the comfiest system ever. I love holding the GBA. And the Switch is alright ergonomically but could be better tbh. But anyway it's still a lot of fun to just play sitting around. Oh and plus sometimes my GF is watching a TV show I don't really want to actively watch and I can sit beside her and just play a videogame with the sound off and semi watch and it's a pretty fun and nice way to be in each other's presence without necessarily interacting, like we can do these things we'd normally do separately in 2 rooms, without being apart. It's a different and comfortable kind of hanging out that is part of what defines what love is.That's pretty cool that you can do da docking with just the USB connection ( just cool in general, i think thats available on some newer lappys too ). Ye that's the reason I'm gonna wait at least until Generation 2, 3 or smth for it to really become fully realised. Currently I just use Steam streaming on my phone with a PS4 controller.I've been looking at some of the cheaper gaymer laptops around $1000-1200 , mostly they have GTX 3050 or 3060 and 11th gen i7.

Honestly don't buy a PC at all right now if all you want to do is game. Do you have an Xbox 5 or PS5? -
2021-11-27 at 1:25 AM UTCI bought an AMD APU laptop R6 in 2016 or so.
It was supposed to be a gamechanger when it came to integrated graphics, combining the CPU and the GPU in one amazing chip, called an APU.
In reality it was shit. Pure shit. Awful CPU, beyond awful GPU. Just a complete piece of shit.
This horseshit Steam shit smeeels the same. Just don't fall for the APU meme.
AMD have been pushing their APU shit for a while. Like 20 years. It has always been major fail. Avoid it like the black coof.

I heard Steam deck is supposed to offer a quality similar to xbox of playstation 5. I have hummed and hawed over the playstation for years. I would probably just get a PS5 if rust console edition wasn't totally trash.

I am definitely not going to preorder it. Gotta wait until it comes out to see the hardware reviews, it very well could be trash but Valve has a reputation and if they fuck over PC gamers they will never live it down. WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE I GUESS -

Yeah, it's not like the Steam Controller was a piece of shit or anything.
If you money is a limiter, buying new is foolish. Buy second hand to maximise your value per dollar spent.
You can get 2/3rd the hardware for 1/2 the price, easy.
