   I would assume public safety plays a huge role and uh general state security I guess.
   
   That said I'm sure if you really really really wanted to you could try.
   
   I bet half the cost or even over that went towards research. viable nuclear weapons, A gun type atom bomb seems almost trivial if you manage to sort out the bad uranium from the good. the knowledge is out there.

   I would never do this. It was just a question of why Your Government (which is supposed to be The People) thinks they can tell The People what to do.
   
   However, there is a youtube of a kid (David Hahn) who made yellow cake (which I guess is the key ingredient to making explosive material for the nuke. I think he made it buy using smoke detectors and glow-in-the-dark paint. the two created a sort of low-level demon core in a tool shed that his mom came to find (and was clearly exposed to it) and called the police. next thing you know Guys with high-level PPE and detecting equipment removed it. I got to find it. I don't remember the exact details but he got into trouble and then got a scholarship to something like MIT or some other college.
