   Basically he shoots the cow because he's a psychopath and then the farmer comes up, they trade guns because they are both gun nuts and his friend finds him and says WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU ARE GONNA GET US PINCHED and he says "hunting" and they run into the forest shooting at a squirrel.
