It was well played out, 2008 banking fiasco allowing anyone to buy a home, with sudden balloon payments kicking in, people panicked, tried to pull cash out. Homes for foreclosed, older families with houses nearly paid off suddenly couldn't sell, the banks foreclosed but kept the houses and rented out to more section 8 vouchers. Suddenly new homes built in 2000-2005 with 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, swimming pools became low income swag.
Happened to us. Scams left and right. Finally home values went up this summer, every former neighbor I had sold and moved out. Also there are other scams happening. -

Cost 6.25 to go from Oakland to Pier 1 SF back in 2012 when i took it. Each way. Probably 8-10 buck each way now. 40 minutes to cross between Alameda/Oakland to the city. That's about the same distance. I could never get those sea legs down. Especially choppy waters on the bay. Took a ferry to Angel Island as a kid during a storm and that shit was like Sailing the open seas. Not rainy as much as it was windy but the rain let up. I was throwing up in the bathroom.
Meh. Free travel expenses to big city lights.
I found a shitty fixer upper in Staten Island for under 280k on Zillow. I bet it's boring as fuck living on a former land dump -

It's NYC, this would be a steal in San Francisco or even West Oakland right now.
Go on Zillow. It's not so much the home as the old adage goes. "Location location location." The homes next to it are upper 800-900k and 1.2 million. It's free ferry to Manhattan. The bridge onto the island is called The Narrow Bridge for a reason. It's a fucking long parking lot at 6am no doubt. Ferry is calming to and from. we took it a few times but never got to walk around staten. The crime index isn't great but it's better than most bay area cities. Manhattan is like 16/100 meaning it's 16x better than say Oakland which is a 1/100 and SF is 2/100. Those are horrible numbers. I live in what was 16/100 dropped to 12/100 last year. But it's relatively safe here. Just don't go take a walk at night time. -

Need 26k and it's estimate monthly mortgage is 695. But I need to find out what the HOA fee is. It's at lease 250-300 but my guess is closed to 500-600

However it's almost 300 sq ft, for 1 person with Gigi visiting for short visits unless we stop seeing each other, it's perfect for a minimalist. Rest your head, some computer time. It's the size of a decent single room Hotel. But it's a place to park money. It wouldn't stay on market long during a hot market and even bring in higher bidding wars. I think it could sit for 90-120 days as well before getting a decent bid.
But yeah, that HOA fee could be a mother fucker. -
