    That's not true for the UK state pension. You have to be fully invested to claim a state pension...30yrs I think it is/was? I know for the first 15yrs or so of me being in America I had to keep paying into my UK state pension so I'd qualify for it when I retire.

    Maybe the people you know are talking about a private pension...which isn't country specific.

    About the UK, I can't remember the figures, and it is the NHS who pays it, not a state pension. I'm sure the rules have changed by now.

The Canadian authorities will even track you down to give you money - or at least they did in at least one case I heard of. "Glad we found you, here's your pension, eh?"
